Impact on peoples lives

The global prevalence of glaucoma for population aged 40–80 years is 3.54% (95% CrI, 2.09–5.82). ... In 2013, the number of people (aged 40–80 years) with glaucoma worldwide was estimated to be 64.3 million, increasing to 76.0 million in 2020 and 111.8 million in 2040.

Damage to any nerve is irreversible and thus blindness by glaucoma is blindness for lifetime. With these implants, glaucoma can no longer be seen as a threat or an obstacle to enjoy your view. This is a game changer!

Glaucotex

Glaucotex is an artificial eye implant which functions just like the human eye. It consists of an image sensor which scans the surrounding and sends information in the form of electric impulses to the optic nerve.
It is made of surgical grade titanium and sends signals to the optic nerve directly at the optimal charge (40-70 millivolts).
Wont have much side effects and is efficient than glaucoma shunts and restores vision!

Glaucoma: Causes and types

Most of the patients suffering from glaucoma do not experience any symptoms or pain. They usually occur very slowly and is not targeted over a particular age group.

Causes of glaucoma:
  • Build up of aqueous humour due to blockage of mesh like drainage channels. This results in elevated intraocular pressure. The reason for blockage is still not known.
  • Other causes include blunt injury, chemical injuries, severe infections, blocked blood vessels and the such.
Glaucoma usually affects both eyes, but it may be worse in one eye.

Most common types of glaucoma:
  • Open-angle glaucoma: It is cause by slow clogging of drainage canals, resulting in increased eye pressure. Characterized by the presence of wide and open angle between iris and cornea. It develops slowly and is a lifelong condition. It's symptoms usually go unnoticed.

  • Angle-closure glaucoma: Caused by blocked drainage canals resulting in sudden elevation of intraocular pressure. Symptoms of this type of glaucoma are very noticeable and requires immediate medical attention.

  • Normal Tension Glaucoma: In this case, the nerves get damaged even though the intraocular pressure is normal.
  • Congenital glaucoma: This type of glaucoma occurs in babies where the drainage canals are poorly developed.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is as of for now, the leading cause of blindness in the world. It is a disease caused due to elevated pressure inside the eye. This damages the nerves in the optic disk( photoreceptors) causing irreversible blindness. In some cases of glaucoma (open- angle glaucoma) symptoms go unnoticed.
Although, there are treatments for glaucoma, these only help in slowing the process of blindness; but none provide a complete solution to the blindness.
